Moving Pictures: Exploration of an Arts Integrated Unit of Study for Elementary Students

led by: Justin Gomlak

The use of wonder that leads to exploration is an essential element in elementary pedagogy. The natural curiosity and inherent creativity of childhood is a perfect springboard for learning. Through guided deep observation of works of art, students not only gain important exposure and specific knowledge of visual art but experience the connectivity of the world firsthand. They make connections to their curricular learning and will connect for themselves two disparate disciplines. Modern education often places learning in silos, and that is not how the world operates. This series of lessons helps students bridge their knowledge of vocabulary and art and music and movement and history…and uses wonder as the vehicle for that connection. In this experiential workshop, participants will be guided through an arts-integrated unit of study for elementary students that connects visual thinking strategies to dance making. By focusing on three distinct styles of painting (Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art) and three female painters whose work fully represents those styles (Mary Cassatt, Lee Krasner and Yayoi Kusama), students explore the artwork first with their eyes, then with their minds, and finally with their bodies. We will use the idea of wonder to help students activate their first language, kinesthetics. Participants will explore pedagogical techniques and examine the benefits of using wonder to deeply engage with art across disciplines.
